Try Dealroom → (BVC) has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the assets of Wave Systems Inc.Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → (WAVE) for an undisclosed sum, the firm announced in September. The deal, led by BVC chief executive officer Chris Barton, brings WAVE under his direct leadership to build an AI-powered drowning-prevention platform. WAVE's board and 90 shareholders have approved the transaction, which is set to close in the coming weeks.
What does WAVE do? WAVE is the largest digital assistive lifeguard technology provider in North America, with systems deployed across 40 US states and Canada. Its GUARDian service is a subscription-based, hardware-as-a-service model built on wearable IoT devices worn by swimmers and lifeguards.
Why now? Barton joined WAVE as a board member and BVC investor in 2024, became chief executive officer in 2025, and led its shift to the subscription model. The acquisition gives him control to expand the company across every type of water environment — from commercial pools to residential backyards.
What's the endgame? Barton wants a single platform combining wearable and camera-based detection for both staffed and unsupervised water. As part of that push, WAVE has launched WAVE VisionDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, an AI camera system that monitors swimmers in real time, paired with Wade, an assistant that lets operators query recorded video by voice or text.
Why it's personal: "In 2003, I lost my daughter Alexis in a lakefront drowning accident," Barton said. "That day is what eventually led me to WAVE, and it's what drives this acquisition today."
The signal: Drowning is the leading cause of accidental injury-related death for children under five, per the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Folding wearable and camera-based detection into one subscription platform reflects a broader move to bring AI monitoring into everyday safety infrastructure.
