The Cambridge, Massachusetts company builds an open-source array engine for multimodal data.

The funding will accelerate product development, go-to-market efforts, and deployment to early adopters in regulated sectors. Two Bear Capital increased its existing investment; Amgen Ventures is the corporate venture arm of biotechnology firm Amgen.

What's the endgame? The rebrand centres on the Enterprise AI Data Substrate, now in private preview — a governed layer that lets AI agents find, access, and use enterprise data in place, under existing controls, with lineage preserved. It connects scattered data to AI tools companies already run, avoiding a costly migration.

Why now? Founder Stavros Papadopoulos, chief executive for the past nine years, said customers spent the last two years asking how to make their data usable by AI safely, "where it already lives, and without losing control of who can see what." He returns full-time to product as chief product officer.

The new hire: Llado, a TileDB board director since 2024, takes over to lead commercial scale. He brings more than three decades in life sciences, including chief information officer roles at MerckDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Alexion Pharmaceuticals. Enterprise AI is "stalling because the underlying data is scattered, difficult to govern," he said.

The company will continue to maintain the TileDB array engine as an open-source project under the TileDB name.

The signal: Investors are betting on the foundational data layer as the point of leverage in enterprise AI. "In the enterprise AI ecosystem, that defining layer belongs to whoever makes enterprise data truly actionable for autonomous agents," said Mike Goguen, founder and managing partner of Two Bear Capital.
