EnTrust's Blue Ocean closes $1.3B maritime finance fund for insurers

The fund is aimed primarily at US insurance investors, offering a more capital-efficient route into Blue Ocean's maritime finance strategy.
By the numbers: The close brings total capital raised for the Blue Ocean strategy to $5 billion since 2023, and $7.6 billion since inception in 2017. Fund IV is EnTrust's largest rated notes fund to date and has already started deploying capital.
What's the endgame? Blue Ocean provides asset-backed financing to shipowners and operators across major shipping segments. The strategy targets small- and medium-sized shipowners left underserved after traditional banks retreated from maritime lending following the Global Financial Crisis.
As of June 30, 2026, the strategy has deployed $7.2 billion across 127 investments and returned roughly $3.5 billion to investors. The Blue Ocean team consists of 29 professionals globally.
Why now? Insurance investor interest has grown with each fund since the first rated notes vehicle launched in 2018, according to EnTrust. Fund IV drew significant commitments from insurers new to the strategy, alongside prior investors who increased their stakes.

Insurance company capital represents roughly 20% of EnTrust's client base worldwide, spanning North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
The signal: With banks focused on the largest listed owners, alternative capital increasingly fills the funding gap in a capital-intensive industry. "Our ability to source and structure opportunities is what continues to set Blue Ocean apart," said Svein Engh, senior managing director and portfolio manager, pointing to more than nine years of investing across market cycles.
