Runway buys France's Kinetix, crosses $200M ARR in physical AI push
What's the deal? Runway, the generative AI startup founded in 2018 by Chileans Cristóbal Valenzuela and Alejandro Matamala with Greece's Anastasis Germanidis, has acquired Kinetix, a French company of 10 people focused on 3D research. It is the New York-based firm's first European acquisition, and the team has already joined Runway's robotics unit in Paris.
What's the endgame? Runway is betting on so-called physical AI. In late 2025 it launched software that simulates and creates digital environments of the real world while respecting the laws of physics. Kinetix adds 3D talent to train models on physically coherent simulation data, an area where video generators still struggle to render consistent scenes and motion.
Why Paris? The purchase gives Runway a physical presence in one of Europe's strongest hubs for 3D modelling and simulation research. Valenzuela said the company had followed Kinetix for some time and that the talks were "quite natural and obvious" (translated from Spanish).
By the numbers: Runway just crossed $200 million in annual recurring revenue and was valued at $5.3 billion, according to Diario Financiero. That marks a sharp climb from its 2023 Series D, which raised at least $100 million at a $1.5 billion valuation, itself triple the roughly $500 million valuation from its 2022 Series C. Most of the ARR comes from enterprise platform sales and model licensing, with research a smaller line.
Why now? Capital is pouring into the sector. Crunchbase News reports venture funding in physical AI hit $47.4 billion across 521 rounds in the first half of 2026 — nearly four times the $12 billion of the second half of 2025.
