OpenAI prepares $400M second venture fund
What's the deal? OpenAI is preparing a second $400 million venture fund, according to reporting from The Wall Street Journal cited by Tech Funding News. The vehicle would be more than twice the size of OpenAI's original $175 million fund, and the company is reportedly seeking an experienced venture capitalist to run it.
The first fund: OpenAI's original Startup Fund launched in 2021 with $175 million from external backers, including Microsoft. Its portfolio has since included 1X Technologies, Anysphere (the company behind Cursor), Descript, Figure AI, Speak, Physical Intelligence, Harvey and Thrive AI Health. The fund has also raised special-purpose vehicles, including a $44.3 million SPV covered in 2024.
Why now? OpenAI's venture strategy gives it a way to support startups across the AI application layer. Companies that take its money may become OpenAI customers, distribution partners or, eventually, acquisition targets. The approach echoes the strategic investing models used by corporate venture arms such as Google Ventures and Amazon's Industrial Innovation Fund.
The signal: A larger vehicle would let OpenAI place more bets while the competition between frontier-model companies moves up the stack—from model capability to workflows, data and customer relationships. It also raises questions about whether a foundation-model company can back startups without nudging them toward its own technology and away from competing platforms.
