Try Dealroom →, a San Francisco-based investment manager focused on US agriculture, has held a first close on its debut commingled private credit fund. The close was anchored by a $150 million commitment from the private credit team of a large US state pension system. Homestead is targeting $350 million in total commitments, with a hard cap of $500 million.

What's the endgame? The strategy originates senior secured loans to agricultural borrowers across the US, primarily backed by farmland and other agricultural assets. It aims to serve financing needs that traditional agricultural lenders often overlook.

Why now? "Agriculture continues to face a structural shortage of flexible lending capital despite strong borrower demand and resilient collateral values," said Dan Little, co-founder and co-chief executive officer. The pension anchor, he added, reflects "increasing institutional demand for differentiated private credit strategies backed by real assets."

The backstory: Founded in 2012, Homestead has deployed more than $1.8 billion across US farmland and agricultural assets. It manages roughly $1.8 billion in equity and credit assets for pension plans, insurers, endowments, foundations, and family offices.

The first close follows a recent strategic partnership with BaringsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and MassMutualDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, launched with a $300 million forward-flow program to support Homestead's lending platform.

The signal: Institutional investors are increasingly hunting for private credit strategies tied to real assets, and farmland — with collateral values that hold up through cycles — offers a diversifier. Homestead is betting its operating network and sourcing reach can fill a lending gap that banks have left open.
