South Korea commits $3.52B fund to fortify its chip supply chain

Why now? The fund is part of a broader strategy to secure South Korea's position in semiconductors as demand rises with artificial intelligence. The government is also providing 5 trillion won in trade finance for suppliers and a separate 1 trillion won programme for partnerships between large and smaller companies.

What it means. The measures support new semiconductor manufacturing clusters and include plans to accelerate permits and infrastructure development. Key milestones include the proposed relocation of a military air base in Gwangju by mid-2028 and plans to supply 14.7 gigawatts of electricity to the Yongin cluster by 2041.
