Anthropic, Macquarie and GIC form Theseus to build dedicated AI data centers
What's the deal? Anthropic, Macquarie Asset ManagementDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and GICDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → have launched Theseus InfrastructureDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a platform to develop, operate, and lease data center capacity to Anthropic under long-term agreements. Each facility will be purpose-built for the AI company, which serves as anchor tenant. The initial focus is the United States.
Who funds what? Funds managed by Macquarie Asset ManagementDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, together with GIC, will own the platform and fund most of the equity for each project. Macquarie manages $497.6 billion in assets; GIC manages Singapore's foreign reserves and invests across more than 40 countries.
Why now? Anthropic says demand for its Claude model keeps growing across businesses, developers, and consumers — and meeting it requires significant new compute. The partnership taps Macquarie's experience financing large-scale digital infrastructure and GIC's global infrastructure investing.
What's the endgame? The parties will jointly identify and develop new sites where Anthropic is the anchor tenant. The developments require significant capital and will create thousands of construction jobs and permanent operational roles in host communities.
What about local costs? Anthropic said it will cover electricity price increases that consumers otherwise may face from these sites, in line with commitments it made earlier this year.
The signal: The deal shows AI developers increasingly turning to institutional capital and dedicated infrastructure vehicles to secure the compute their models depend on. Rather than build alone, Anthropic is offloading the capital burden to global asset managers while locking in long-term capacity.
