Demerara Distillers backs St Kitts with $14M expansion
What's the deal? Guyana-headquartered Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL)Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → is redeveloping and expanding its Bird Rock operations in St Kitts and Nevis in a project estimated at roughly US$14 million. Prime Minister Terrance Drew broke ground at a ceremony on August 6, calling the move a "strong vote of confidence" in the Federation's economy.
What's the endgame? DDL, a manufacturer and distributor of premium spirits and beverages, has operated in St Kitts and Nevis since 1996. The expansion adds production and warehousing facilities, a laboratory and quality-control infrastructure, offices, retail and commercial space, and visitor amenities.
The development will also incorporate energy-efficient systems and renewable-energy solutions where practical.
Why now? Drew said the investment aligns with his government's strategy of building a more diversified, productive economy, with greater emphasis on manufacturing, exports, and foreign-exchange generation. He pointed to expected employment, skills development, and business prospects for local contractors, suppliers, and entrepreneurs.
What changes for the market? Drew framed the expansion as proof that regional integration can move beyond policy discussion. "Your decision to invest here sends an important message that our federation remains a jurisdiction in which serious investors can establish roots, expand their operations, and build enduring partnerships with our people," he said.
The signal: A Guyanese company deepening its stake in another CARICOM member state signals that Caribbean cross-border enterprise is turning integration talk into tangible investment — with the test, as Drew put it, being its "impact on people."
