The fund targets research-and-development startups across life sciences and healthcare.

What's the endgame? Red 1 focuses on biotech, medical devices, and healthcare services, backing startups from the applied-research stage through to late-stage development. It combines primary and secondary investing, aiming to fund new research while giving founders and existing shareholders liquidity.

The fund's details: Red 1 is targeting ¥6 billion, with a maximum of ¥8 billion. It runs from June 2025 to June 2037, with a possible three-year extension, and invests in deep-tech startups across bio, drug discovery, medical devices, and digital health.

Why now? Life science and healthcare ventures need long timelines and heavy capital to move from research to commercialisation, yet funding remains limited. Red Capital says specialised investors who can properly assess the technology and support it long-term are essential in fields such as biotech and medical devices.

Who's behind it? Red Capital was co-founded by two women general partners who hold doctorates, building a healthcare-focused firm around scientific expertise and investment experience.

What's next? The firm plans to expand its life science and healthcare investing, and to strengthen governance, risk management, and disclosure to attract institutional investors at home and abroad. It framed JIC's backing as recognition of its specialist approach and its strategy spanning research, growth, and capital recycling.

The signal: A government-linked investor anchoring a specialist, founder-led healthcare fund points to Japan's push to channel long-term capital into deep-tech and close the funding gap that slows commercialisation of its research.
