EnerTech backs Class8, the OEM-native AI layer for trucking

EnerTech Capital has invested in Class8, a Toronto-based startup building an OEM-native AI platform for commercial trucking. Financial terms were not disclosed. The company was already backed by Xplorer Capital, Commerce Ventures, Inspired Capital, and Resolute Ventures.

It uses carrier-authorised OEM vehicle data and real-time context to connect dispatch, compliance, communications, maintenance, and freight workflows. The aim is to help fleets coordinate decisions across the truck and back office without adding a separate hardware and software stack.

Commercial trucks are increasingly connected, but the software running them stays fragmented across the vehicle, driver, and back office. Class8 recently struck a partnership with Daimler Truck North America to offer its AI services to eligible Freightliner customers, with initial capabilities including Dispatch AI, Load Optimization, and a wireless electronic logging device (ELD).

The investment will support expansion across fleet operations, emerging in-cab interfaces, carrier verification, and trusted data applications. Class8 also works directly with Volvo Trucks and Mack Trucks on its Load Optimization technology.

Beyond fleet operations, the same data foundation can support carrier verification, vehicle safety, cargo integrity, maintenance intelligence, claims, and insurance underwriting. "Class8 is building the intelligence layer that connects OEM vehicle data with the decisions made by drivers, dispatchers, maintenance teams, and partners," said chief executive officer Chris Atkinson.

As trucks grow more software-defined, OEM connectivity is emerging as a foundation for practical fleet applications, reducing reliance on aftermarket hardware. Class8's backers are betting the vehicle itself — not a bolt-on device — becomes the starting point for trucking software.
