SpaceXAI, Cursor launch Grok 4.5 to chase Wall Street and OpenAI

What's the deal? SpaceXAI has unveiled Grok 4.5, a new AI model built with coding startup CursorDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → to handle finance, legal, and software engineering tasks. It's the first joint model from the two companies, arriving weeks after SpaceX agreed to acquire Cursor in a deal valuing the startup at $60 billion.

What's the endgame? The model is designed to "handle difficult, long-running tasks," according to a blog post, with a focus on software engineering. Unlike Cursor's prior models, Grok 4.5 targets a wider mix of work, including legal and financial services, and adds increased cybersecurity capabilities.

Why now? Elon Musk's firm is racing to catch rivals Anthropic and OpenAI. Musk said earlier this year that his AI startup — known as xAI before merging with SpaceX — had fallen behind on coding, prompting staffing changes. SpaceXAI released its first coding agent in May.

The context: Ahead of its long-awaited IPO, SpaceX secured the right to buy Cursor, a central player in the "vibe coding" era. The companies later began sharing data and computing resources to build the new model. Musk's firm has also pushed into finance work to win Wall Street clients and boost revenue.

What could go wrong? The release lands amid heightened government scrutiny of new models, especially their cybersecurity capabilities. The Trump administration briefly imposed foreign access restrictions on Anthropic's most capable models and asked OpenAI to stagger its newest release; both firms have since been cleared to proceed.

In its blog post, Cursor said it has taken steps to "detect and block bad actors." The company said its goal is to "preserve legitimate security work, including finding and patching vulnerabilities, while restricting the workflows most likely to cause harm."

The signal: The launch shows AI developers converging on high-value enterprise work — coding, legal, and finance — as the next battleground for business customers and revenue.
