Z.ai co-founder Tang Jie: catching up to Fable-class AI "won't take that long"

Z.ai (Zhipu AI) co-founder Tang Jie has signalled that the Chinese AI lab expects to close the gap with frontier Western models faster than rivals anticipate.

In a public exchange on X on 18 June 2026, a user asked Tang Jie for his timeline for China to reach "Fable class" — a reference to Anthropic's frontier Fable model family — noting that Z.ai's GLM-5.2 had "certainly shorten[ed] the gap." Elon Musk replied to the same thread estimating "Probably Q1." Tang Jie's response: "won't take that long" — implying Z.ai expects to reach Fable-class capability before early 2027, plausibly within 2026.

The remark comes shortly after GLM-5.2 became the highest-ranked open-weights model on Design Arena, and underscores Z.ai's positioning as one of the most aggressive open-weights challengers to the leading US labs. Tang Jie is a Tsinghua University professor who co-founded Zhipu AI as a university spin-off in 2019; the company went public in 2026 at a $6.6B valuation.
