China approves world's first commercial brain implant as BCI race with Neuralink heats up
What's the deal? China has granted its first-ever commercial approval for an invasive brain-computer interface (BCI), clearing Neuracle Technology's implantable system for adult patients partially paralysed by spinal cord injuries.
The device — a coin-sized wireless implant placed on the brain's outer surface — reads neural signals and translates them into hand movements via a robotic glove. It is also the first invasive BCI anywhere in the world to receive commercial approval.
Neuracle, founded in 2011, is preparing to list on the Star Market of the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The approval triggered a stock rally among BCI-related companies in Hong Kong and mainland China, with several surging more than 10%.
Why now? China has designated BCI as one of six strategic industries of the future in its latest five-year plan, and has pledged to develop two or three global players in the sector by 2030. The government has actively streamlined regulatory review to accelerate that goal.
Fresh capital is flowing in alongside the regulatory push: Shanghai StairMed Technology raised 500 million yuan ($72.6 million) in a round led by Alibaba, bringing its total funding over the past year to 1.1 billion yuan. Gestala Chengdu Technology also announced a 150 million yuan seed round around the same time.
What could go wrong? Neuracle's approval covers a relatively narrow patient group — those who retain some upper-arm function — and its implant has fewer signal-detection channels than more advanced devices. It has been tested in only 36 patients. More capable implants, including those placed deeper in brain tissue, have demonstrated far broader applications, from browsing the internet to playing video games.
Neuracle's device sits outside the brain's outermost membrane, a design choice that limits both its reach and its competitive position against next-generation rivals.
The signal: China's approval is a shot across the bow at Neuralink and the broader US BCI industry. StairMed says its implants already outperform Neuralink in certain areas — its surgery requires only a 3mm to 5mm hole and uses electrodes a fifth the size of Neuralink's — and plans to approach Neuralink's total clinical implant count by late 2026.
Globally, investment in the space is accelerating: in the US, Science Corp. recently raised $230 million to commercialise its own brain implant. The race to turn BCI from a research curiosity into a mainstream medical product is now a two-country competition.
