Metabolis
Scalable metabolite discovery for metabolic disease therapies.
The founders
The company
Metabolis is developing what it calls keystone medicines: naturally occurring metabolites that can restore cellular function across several metabolic diseases. It screens metabolites across hundreds of yeast disease models, then tests candidates in AI-supported at-home patient studies.
Metabolic diseases are genetically distinct, but the company says many affect the same metabolic hubs, so a small set of metabolites could treat many of them. At-home studies are meant to produce regulatory-quality data at lower cost and faster than traditional trials.
Metabolis is based in Amsterdam and was founded in 2026 by chief executive Kristin Kantautas and Ethan Perlstein. Its first programme is NMN for DHDDS-CDG, which went from a yeast screen to a Phase 1 trial in three years.
Kristin Kantautas identified NMN as a therapeutic candidate for DHDDS-CDG and studied at the University of Toronto. Ethan Perlstein previously founded Perlara, where yeast models were used for drug discovery.
