The company

What they're building

Athira builds real-time AI avatar infrastructure — lifelike conversational avatars rendered live in the browser, with streaming speech, phoneme-level facial animation and conversation-driven behaviour — plus an adaptive corporate-learning platform built on top of it. The learning product turns a company's own documents and expertise into structured courses, where a two-way avatar teaches and practises with learners and a behavioural engine models comprehension from conversational signals, so people advance on demonstrated understanding rather than content completion.

Why now

Speech-to-speech models and real-time rendering have reached the point where a browser-based avatar can hold a conversation rather than play a recording, which makes two-way practice a viable format for corporate training. That matters for onboarding and compliance work, where completion rates have long stood in for understanding.

The backstory

The company was founded in 2026 and is based in Stanford, California. Beyond that, little of the origin story is public; the team frames its mission as building the intelligence layer behind how people learn, work and grow.

Why this team

Co-founder Arnav Gupta studied at Stanford University and has worked at Eightfold, ASDRP and Pioneer Academics; co-founder Rodean Morshidi studied at UC Santa Cruz and has worked at Stand Together and YALiberty. Between them the backgrounds span talent software and education programmes, which maps onto the two halves of what Athira is selling.
