The company

What they're building

AniBiz is a B2B marketplace and intelligence platform for anime IP licensing, connecting rights holders with global buyers in a centralised, verified digital environment. It replaces relationship-driven, manual dealmaking with curated discovery, matchmaking and direct introductions across a database of thousands of anime series.

Why now

The anime market is projected to exceed $35 billion in 2026, yet rights remain fragmented across territories, formats and time windows, gated by personal connections. AniBiz, launched on 2 July 2026, is betting that new entrants — brands, manufacturers, retailers, startups — want a way in that doesn't depend on who they know.

The backstory

AniBiz is the first product from San Francisco-based Nakama, Inc., founded by anime-industry veterans who previously helped build Crunchyroll. The team says it built the platform to fix the fragmented, relationship-heavy nature of anime licensing they saw first-hand.

Why this team

The founders include Crunchyroll founder and former CEO Kun Gao (President) alongside founding members Brady McCollum (CEO) and Sae Whan Song (Head of Business Development). Their background spans global expansion, consumer products, licensing and co-productions — the exact muscles this marketplace needs.
