The company
ABIOMICA recovers rare earth elements, mainly neodymium, dysprosium and scandium, from industrial waste and electronic waste. Its continuous bioreactor uses extremophile microorganisms to leach the metals out, in place of the toxic acids used in conventional hydrometallurgy.
These metals go into electronics, electric vehicles and clean energy equipment. Recovering them from waste with microbes is meant to lower cost and environmental impact and to secure supply of those materials.
ABIOMICA is based in Palm Harbor, United States, and was founded in 2026. It is at pilot stage and is building partnerships in the mining and waste-recycling chain for industrial deployment.
Founder Oleksandr Samarskyi previously worked at Shell.
