01 · Background

Who ABP is.

Historical Background
ABP was founded in 1922 as the pension fund for individuals employed in the government and education sectors in the Netherlands. Initially established under state control, the fund, originally named Algemeen Burgerlijk Pensioenfonds, has grown to become one of the world's largest pension funds.
Source of Capital
The fund's capital is sourced from the pension contributions made by more than 3 million participants and their employers in the Dutch government and education fields. As of November 2023, ABP held assets valued at €552 billion.
Major Events
An agreement has been reached to implement a new pension scheme for members, which is scheduled to take effect in January 2027. The fund's asset manager, APG, is slated to exclusively manage investments for ABP starting around the year 2030.
Allocation Strategy
The investment portfolio is diversified across various asset classes, including equities, bonds, real estate, and an increasing allocation to private market investments. A significant portion of the public market allocation is being transitioned to passive, index-led strategies to manage costs. The fund has set a goal to allocate €30 billion to impact investments by 2030, with a focus on climate solutions, sustainable energy, and innovation. Of this amount, €10 billion is targeted for investment within the Netherlands.
