- Major Events
- In 2008, IBM froze the pension plan, meaning employees would no longer accrue future benefits. In 2023, the plan's obligations for certain beneficiaries were transferred to Prudential and MetLife through the purchase of group annuity contracts. In a significant reversal, IBM announced in early 2024 that it would unfreeze the pension plan and once again contribute to it for its US employees, replacing its 401(k) matching program.
