Who Sitra is.
- Historical Background
- Sitra was established in 1967 as a gift to Finland for its 50th anniversary of independence. It is a future-oriented fund that operates directly under the supervision of the Finnish Parliament. Initially a significant provider of R&D funding in Finland, Sitra financed early-stage product development, including the development of xylitol, and provided risk capital for the internationalization of Finnish companies such as Kone.
- Source of Capital
- Sitra's operations are financed by the investment returns from its original endowment capital. The endowment was granted by the Finnish Parliament and the Bank of Finland. By law, this capital must be invested securely and profitably to fund Sitra's ongoing work.
- Major Events
- Since 2014, Sitra has not made any new direct investments into companies, shifting its focus to societal development and acting as a think tank and research body.
- Allocation Strategy
- Sitra's investment assets are primarily allocated to funds. The organization determines the high-level allocation, but the external funds' managers make the decisions on individual investment targets. The fund's mandate is to promote Finland's sustainable development and competitiveness. Its work is organized around themes such as building a fair data economy and accelerating ecological sustainability.
