The company was established in Wausau, Wisconsin, by a group of local business leaders in response to the state's newly enacted Workmen's Compensation Act, making it one of the earliest firms in the workers' compensation field. In 1979, the company formally changed its name to Employers Insurance of Wausau, A Mutual Company.
