About Zoots Corp.

Zoots Corp. was a dry cleaning and laundry service provider founded in 1998 by Todd Krasnow and Tom Stemberg, who were also instrumental in creating the Staples office supply chain. The founders, with a background in building a successful retail giant, aimed to apply a similar model to the fragmented dry cleaning industry. They secured significant initial capital, including $20 million from private individuals and $38 million in institutional financing, with a notable Series A round of $14 million in September 1999 from investors like Weston Presidio and Charlesbank Capital Partners.

The company's business model centered on customer convenience, featuring freestanding stores open seven days a week, 24-hour drop-off and pickup through secure lockers, and drive-through services. Zoots operated on a hub-and-spoke model, with a large central processing plant, which it called a "cleaning laboratory," serving numerous retail locations and delivery routes. This strategy fueled rapid expansion, and by its height, the company operated 78 retail stores and over 115 delivery routes across eight states on the East Coast and as far west as Ohio. Revenue was generated from dry cleaning, laundry, alterations, and shoe repair services offered at its physical locations and through its pickup and delivery network.

Despite its initial growth and achieving profitability in 2006, Zoots faced significant challenges. The 2008 recession, coupled with an abrupt departure of its CEO and CFO, led to a credit crisis that forced the company to sell off assets. U.S. Dry Cleaning Corp. acquired some of its Virginia locations in 2008. The company continued to operate on a smaller scale, primarily in New England, but its financial difficulties persisted. In January 2018, Zoots Corp. filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, leading to the sudden closure of its remaining 18 locations in Massachusetts. The abrupt shutdown left customers and employees in a difficult situation, with clothes locked inside the stores until a bankruptcy judge approved a plan for their return.
