About Zong

Zong Inc. operated as a mobile payments platform primarily catering to the online gaming and social networking sectors. The company was founded by David Marcus in 2008 as a spin-off from the Swiss mobile media company Echovox. Marcus, who served as the CEO, later became the president of PayPal after Zong's acquisition.

Zong's core business was providing a seamless way for users to make micropayments for digital goods and services online. The platform's main value proposition was enabling payments to be charged directly to a user's mobile phone bill, which was particularly beneficial for customers without credit cards or for those making small, frequent purchases. To use the service, a consumer would enter their mobile phone number, which Zong would then verify to clear the payment against their wireless service account. The business model revolved around partnerships with mobile network operators, which allowed Zong to process these carrier-billed transactions. Initially, the transaction fees were as high as 40%, which made the service suitable for virtual goods with high margins. These rates eventually dropped to as low as 5%, opening potential for expansion into physical goods.

The company established connections with over 250 mobile network operators globally, offering its services in 45 countries and 21 languages. Its client roster included prominent online merchants such as Facebook, Sony Online Entertainment, and Ubisoft. A significant milestone for the company was winning the 2009 Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Award for New Product Innovation in the Mobile Payments category. In July 2011, eBay Inc. announced its agreement to acquire Zong for approximately $240 million in cash, a deal that was completed in August of the same year. Following the acquisition, Zong was integrated into PayPal to bolster its mobile payment capabilities. The Zong brand and service were eventually discontinued in May 2015.
