Founded in 1958, Zhengzhou Coal Mining Machinery Group, now ZMJ Group, started with a clear focus: manufacturing machinery for the coal mining industry. For decades, this state-owned enterprise honed its craft, becoming a leader in China's heavy equipment sector. A pivotal moment arrived in 1996 when the company went public on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, a move that provided capital for significant technological upgrades and expansion. A key theme in the ZMJ story is strategic evolution. Facing a ceiling in the coal machinery market, Chairman Jiao Chengyao guided the company toward diversification. This led to a major playbook shift, entering the auto parts industry. A significant acquisition was the purchase of Robert Bosch's starter motor and generator business, a move aimed at acquiring not just production lines, but also valuable R&D and patented technologies. This dual-focus on coal machinery and auto parts defines their business today. The company is now dual-listed on both the Shanghai and Hong Kong stock exchanges and has expanded its presence globally.
