Zinwave

Established in 2002 as a spin-out from the University of Cambridge and University College London (UCL), Zinwave was founded by a team of academics including Professor Alwyn Seeds and Dr. David Wake from UCL, along with Professors Penty and White from Cambridge. The company originated from the 'Fibre-Radio for In-Building Distributed Antenna Systems' (FRIDAY) research project, which developed a method for distributing multiple wireless signals over a single multimode fiber at a lower cost. Zinwave secured its first Series A funding of $8 million in 2006, followed by two Series B rounds totaling approximately $13.91 million by 2010. In February 2014, the company was acquired by McWane Inc., a U.S.-based manufacturing firm, which helped accelerate product development and expand its geographical presence. A subsequent acquisition occurred on January 5, 2023, when Wilson Electronics, a leader in cellular signal repeater technology, purchased Zinwave to enhance its commercial portfolio with fiber-based DAS solutions.

The core of Zinwave's offering is its wideband active DAS, which operates entirely on fiber-optic cabling. This system is designed to be service-agnostic, supporting a broad spectrum of frequencies from 150 MHz up to 5 GHz on a single hardware layer. This capability allows the system to handle cellular (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G), public safety (including FirstNet), and private LTE (CBRS) services simultaneously without requiring hardware upgrades for new frequencies or services. Zinwave's product lines, such as the UNItivity and UNIwave series, are composed of five main components: a primary hub, secondary hub, service module, optical module, and remote units. The primary hub interfaces with the RF source and converts signals to optical for distribution over fiber to remote units, which then convert the signal back to RF for broadcast. This streamlined architecture simplifies installation, resembling that of a Wi-Fi network, and is designed to reduce space and energy consumption.
