About Zhidou

Zhidou Electric Vehicle Co., Ltd. is a Chinese automaker specializing in the design and production of electric microcars targeted at urban commuters. The company’s history began in 2006 when its founder, Bao Wenguang, started developing small electric cars under the Shandong Xindayang Group. Initially focused on the European market, Zhidou achieved EU E-Mark certification in 2012, allowing it to export its vehicles. The company officially entered the Chinese market in 2014 and established Zhidou Electric Vehicle Co., Ltd. in 2015 as a joint venture involving multiple shareholders, including at various times Geely Holding Group, XDY Machinery and Electronics Group, and GSR Ventures.

After achieving early success and becoming a notable player in China's micro EV segment, Zhidou faced financial difficulties, leading to bankruptcy proceedings in 2019. The company underwent a significant capital and strategic reorganization, announcing its official return in October 2023. This revival was driven by a consortium of investors, including Geely Auto Group and Aima Technology Group, a major e-bike manufacturer. This positions Zhidou to leverage Geely's supply chain and R&D resources alongside Aima's extensive sales network for its comeback.

Zhidou’s business model centers on producing affordable, compact, and energy-efficient electric vehicles for “Micro-Traveling” in urban environments. Its product lineup has included the D1, D2, and D3 models. The D2, an updated version of the original, featured a 41 hp electric motor and an 18 kWh battery, offering a top speed of 85 km/h. The D3 was a slightly larger and better-equipped alternative. Following its restructuring, Zhidou launched the Rainbow mini EV in April 2024. The Rainbow is a 3-door, 4-seater hatchback available in several vibrant colors. It offers two powertrain options—a 20 kW and a 30 kW motor—and has a maximum range of up to 205 km (CLTC) with its lithium iron phosphate batteries. Priced from approximately $4,400 USD, the Rainbow is positioned to compete in the budget-friendly microcar segment, targeting consumers seeking a practical and personalized mode of city transport.
