ZestCash

ZestCash, founded in 2009 as ZestFinance by Douglas Merrill and executives from CapitalOne and Google, aimed to revolutionize credit underwriting by utilizing advanced data science. Merrill, a former CIO at Google and holder of a Ph.D. in cognitive science from Princeton, was inspired to start the company after seeing friends and family struggle to get emergency cash. Revenue is generated by providing this enterprise software to clients across various credit categories such as mortgages, auto loans, and personal loans.

The platform helps lenders increase loan approval rates without adding risk and reduce charge-offs by leveraging machine learning to gain deeper insights from more data. A key feature is its Fairness Kit, which uses adversarial de-biasing techniques to make lending more equitable. By automating the documentation and validation of model builds, the software helps clients with compliance.
