About ZapGo

ZapGo is a UK-based electric vehicle (EV) charge point operator (CPO) focused on deploying rapid and reliable charging infrastructure in underserved and remote locations across the United Kingdom. The company was newly launched in early 2024 after securing a £25 million investment from OPTrust, with additional funding from its management team and founders, Kingsley Capital Partners. The new CEO is Steve Leighton.

The company's business model involves offering property and landowners a fully funded, "Zero cost, Zero effort, Zero risk" solution to install EV chargers, which in turn creates a revenue stream for the property owners from charging sessions. Zapgo partners with organizations like Fairgame, representing lower and non-league football clubs, and HeritageXplore, which features stately homes and gardens, to install chargers in destination locations where people spend time. For its operations, Zapgo utilizes a white-label software platform from AMPECO and DC fast chargers from Alpitronic, allowing it to focus on operational excellence rather than in-house software and hardware development. The company aims to install 4,000 rapid and high-power chargers.

This iteration of Zapgo is distinct from the original company, ZapGo Ltd, founded by Stephen Voller in 2013. The original firm was a technology company developing Carbon-Ion (C-Ion) batteries, a safer, faster-charging alternative to lithium-ion based on graphene and other nano-carbons. Despite developing the technology and holding numerous patents, ZapGo Ltd faced financial difficulties. Citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on a crucial funding round and the burden of servicing significant debt taken on in 2018, the company entered administration in July 2020. Its assets were later sold. In January 2021, it was announced that Corporate Universe, Inc. would acquire the assets of Carbon Ion Energy Storage Ltd., formerly known as ZapGo Inc.
