About Yulex

Yulex is a materials science company focused on producing plant-based, natural rubber to replace petroleum-derived and other synthetic materials in consumer, medical, and industrial goods. The company was founded in 2000 by Daniel R. Swiger and Jeffery A. Martin. Martin, who has a long history in the natural rubber industry, was inspired to find a sustainable alternative to neoprene after reading an article by Patagonia's founder, Yvon Chouinard, which dismissed limestone-based neoprene as "greenwashing."

Initially, Yulex derived its name and primary material from the guayule plant, a desert shrub native to the southwestern U.S. and Mexico, becoming the first producer of natural rubber latex in the United States. A pivotal moment came in 2012 through a partnership with Patagonia to develop the first neoprene-free wetsuit using this guayule rubber. This collaboration was a success, leading Patagonia to transition all its wetsuits to Yulex foam by 2016. To meet growing market demand, Yulex expanded its sourcing to include Hevea rubber from FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC® (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified plantations, ensuring the materials do not contribute to deforestation.

The company's business model is centered on B2B sales of its proprietary rubber grades, which serve as the building blocks for its core products. One of its main offerings is YULEX® closed-cell foam, a direct replacement for neoprene used in wetsuits, footwear, accessories, and sports medicine products. Another key product is YULASTIC®, a natural rubber filament designed as a drop-in replacement for synthetic spandex/elastane in textiles like denim, socks, and elastics. YULASTIC is reported to match synthetic alternatives in durability while offering superior elastic recovery. Yulex also produces YULEX® PURE, a 99% purified natural rubber latex for medical applications like surgical gloves and catheters, addressing concerns over latex allergies.

Financially, Yulex has secured $27.5 million in funding over three rounds, with a significant Series C round of $15 million in 2011 led by Argonaut Private Equity to expand production capabilities. The company operates through a global network, with headquarters in Solana Beach, California, offices in Seattle and Ho Chi Minh City, and authorized manufacturing partners in Asia and Central America. In late 2023, Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) Bui, a former biotech executive and intellectual property lawyer who joined in 2022, was appointed CEO, succeeding founder Jeff Martin.
