About Yonder Music

Yonder Music, founded in New York in 2014, operated as a mobile-only digital music service with a distinct business model aimed at emerging markets. The company was established by Adam Kidron, a British ex-music producer and serial entrepreneur who also served as its CEO until June 2017. Kidron's prior venture, Beyond Oblivion, was a similarly structured music startup that ended in bankruptcy, and Yonder Music was largely considered a second attempt at this bundled service concept.

The core of Yonder Music's strategy was to provide a music streaming and download service that was free to the end-user. Instead of a direct subscription fee, the cost was bundled into mobile phone tariffs or the sale of a mobile device through partnerships with telecommunication companies. This approach was designed to differentiate telecom products that otherwise competed solely on price, targeting the next wave of smartphone users in markets like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Bangladesh. The service was launched to an initial 15 million users and at its peak, managed a library of over 10 million songs.

The platform was developed as a "social first" application, featuring an activity feed similar to social networks where users could follow others and share music recommendations. It offered unlimited, commercial-free access to its music catalog for both streaming and offline playback. To secure content, Yonder Music established contracts with major record labels, which required implementing robust digital rights management and encryption to protect music both in the cloud and on user devices. Despite reaching over a million users, the company faced challenges with user retention. After an initial shutdown, the service attempted a short-lived relaunch before ceasing operations permanently in June 2018, citing a failure to raise additional investment.
