YoCripto
Digital platform in Latin America, launching the first credit card that offers Bitcoin Rewards with every purchase
About YoCripto
YoCripto, operating as Yo, was a financial technology company founded in 2021 by Julián Arber and Rafael Maya, with its headquarters in Mexico City, Mexico. The company's mission was to enhance financial inclusion in Latin America by bridging traditional finance with cryptocurrency.
The founders brought significant expertise to the venture. Julián Arber, the CEO, holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and has a background in finance and consulting with firms like Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, and McKinsey & Company. Co-founder Rafael Maya possesses over 15 years of experience as an entrepreneur in the mobile and AI sectors.
YoCripto's core product was a Visa credit card that initially offered Bitcoin rewards, reportedly up to 3% on purchases. The business model centered on providing revolving credit lines collateralized by users' cryptocurrency holdings, specifically Bitcoin. This approach aimed to mitigate default risk, allowing the company to offer credit to individuals who might otherwise be excluded from traditional banking, such as the young and underbanked. By using digital assets as collateral, clients could access liquidity without having to sell their crypto investments. In May 2023, the company launched a new credit card tailored for young adults, featuring a one-payment guarantee model to help them build a credit history.
In May 2022, YoCripto secured a $4 million seed funding round led by DILA Capital, with participation from 14 other investors. The capital was intended for its product launch, expansion, and Bitcoin acquisition. The company also formed strategic alliances with Idemia for secure, recycled PVC card manufacturing and Segmail for logistics. However, according to PitchBook data, the company is now listed as out of business as of January 2025.
