About Ymagis

Founded in 2007 by Jean Mizrahi and Christophe Lacroix, Ymagis established itself as a key provider of digital technology services for the European cinema industry. Mizrahi, serving as CEO, leveraged his expertise to guide the company's growth. Initially, the company focused on facilitating the transition of movie theaters from film to digital projection. It developed a business model inspired by the American Virtual Print Fee (VPF), which financed the digitization of cinemas by collecting contributions from film distributors who saved money on physical print copies. This model allowed Ymagis to secure contracts with major cinema chains like UGC and MK2.

Ymagis expanded its offerings through strategic acquisitions, significantly broadening its market presence. In 2014, the company acquired dCinex, and in 2015, it took over the historic Eclair Group, a company founded in 1907 specializing in content services. These acquisitions, among others like Proyecson in Spain and SmartJog Ymagis Logistics, enabled the group to provide a comprehensive suite of services across the entire cinema value chain. This rapid expansion led to a corporate rebranding in 2016, structuring the business into two main units: CinemaNext, for all exhibitor-facing services including equipment sales, installation, and maintenance; and Eclair, for content services such as post-production, digital distribution, restoration, and versioning. The company's client base included movie exhibitors, distributors, production companies, and VOD platform operators.

Facing the maturation of the digital conversion market, Ymagis sought new revenue streams. A significant diversification began in 2017 with a move into the location-based entertainment sector through the launch of Illucity, a brand of virtual reality (VR) adventure parks and cinema-based VR corners. These centers offer a range of immersive experiences, including VR escape games, arcades, and team-based challenges, targeting both the general public and corporate clients for team-building events. However, the company faced significant financial challenges, leading to a financial restructuring plan and receivership proceedings for some of its subsidiaries, including Eclair Cinéma SAS, in the years leading up to 2020.
