About Ygnition Networks

Ygnition Networks, founded in September 2001 and formerly known as InterQuest Communications until November 2003, operated as a private cable operator and broadband services company with its headquarters in Seattle, Washington. The company's strategic focus was on the multi-dwelling unit (MDU) market, which includes apartment buildings and condominium complexes. Ygnition's business model centered on acquiring the assets of struggling broadband service providers and securing contracts with apartment communities and developers, which sometimes granted them exclusive rights to provide services to residents. This exclusivity was later impacted by an FCC ruling in 2007 that made such contracts illegal.

The company provided a bundle of communication services specifically tailored for the real estate industry, primarily serving residents of multifamily housing. Its core offerings included high-speed internet, cable television, and digital voice (VoIP) services. To deliver these services, Ygnition purchased cable and satellite television from providers like DISH Network and redistributed them through its own infrastructure. Internet services were supplied via various connections, ranging from T1 to OC3 or ethernet over fiber. The company also ventured into the VoIP market through partnerships with wholesalers, utilizing traffic shaping technology to prioritize voice data for better quality. By 2007, Ygnition provided internet access to 150,000 apartment units and cable TV to 50,000 units across seven states.

Over its history, Ygnition Networks was backed by several venture capital and private equity firms, including ComVentures, Advanced Equities, Chrysalis Ventures, and Fuse Capital. The company also grew through acquisitions, such as the merger with Convergent Broadband Communications in September 2008 and an earlier deal with Darwin Networks in October 2001. Ultimately, Ygnition Networks was acquired by Upstream Network on December 19, 2012.
