Xythos Software.
Secure document management and collaboration software for academic, commercial, and government organizations
About Xythos Software.
Founded in 1999 and headquartered in San Francisco, California, Xythos Software, Inc. developed document and file management software designed to enable organizations to securely manage and share information. The company initially operated as an OEM supplier of portal technology before shifting its business model to sell its document management application directly to enterprises for use in their own data centers. This strategy proved successful, leading to a profitable, standalone entity with over 4 million licensed users across approximately 450 to 500 enterprise organizations.
Xythos catered to a diverse client base that included large banks, manufacturing companies, medical research institutions, government agencies, and higher education institutions. The company's business model primarily revolved around on-premise software licenses, which accounted for 75-80% of its revenue, supplemented by annual renewals and professional services. In December 2006, responding to market demand, Xythos launched Xythos On Demand (XOD), a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform, marking its entry into cloud-based services. This offering mirrored the functionality of its on-premise solution, providing enterprise-grade document management as a hosted service.
The company's product suite was built on an open standards-based architecture, a key differentiator that allowed clients to leverage their existing IT infrastructure. Core products included the Xythos Enterprise Document Management suite and Xythos On Demand. Key features across these platforms were robust document versioning with check-in/checkout capabilities, content classification and tagging, workflow automation, and secure file sharing. A notable component was Xythos Drive, a desktop application that mapped the online repository as a local drive and enabled offline file access with automatic synchronization. Another feature, Intellittach, integrated with email clients like Outlook to replace file attachments with secure, encrypted links, addressing issues of file size and security. The platform also incorporated Web 2.0 technologies such as wikis for collaboration and RSS feeds for content updates.
After a long-standing partnership where its technology was embedded in the Blackboard Content System, Xythos Software was acquired by Blackboard Inc. on November 30, 2007, for approximately $36.4 million. The acquisition was a strategic move for Blackboard to own a technology critical to its product set and to integrate content management more deeply into its offerings. Following the acquisition, Xythos continued to operate under its own name in San Francisco.
