About Xueba
Xueba100, legally registered as Shanghai Qianwenwandaba Cloud Computing Technology Co., Ltd., was an educational technology platform founded in 2013 by CEO Zhang Kailei. The company targeted the K-12 student demographic in China, providing an online platform that connected students with instructors for customized curriculum and test-preparation resources.
Zhang Kailei, a graduate of Nankai University's School of Mathematical Sciences, had prior entrepreneurial experience in the education sector. During university, he founded "Wenba Education," a company focused on tutoring for primary and secondary school students, which was later acquired. Following his initial venture, he entered the finance industry before returning to education technology with the launch of Xueba100. The company's core offering was a one-on-one online tutoring service. This service utilized the platform's vast database, reportedly built from 10 billion student searches, to analyze a student's grasp of specific knowledge points and create a tailored learning plan.
Xueba100 operated on a direct-to-consumer model, generating revenue from fees paid by parents for tutoring services. The company successfully raised significant venture capital, securing a $5 million Series A in March 2014, a $50 million Series B in February 2015, a $100 million Series C in January 2017, and further funding in subsequent years. Investors included prominent firms like Qiming Venture Partners, Vertex Holdings, and Trustbridge Partners. Despite its substantial funding and initial growth, Xueba100 faced intense competition within China's booming online education market. The company ultimately ceased most of its operations around January 2021 after failing to secure further investment, leading to its collapse.
