Wuxi Biortus Biosciences

Wuxi Biortus Biosciences is a contract research organization (CRO) specializing in protein-focused research and development services to support drug discovery. Founded in 2009 in Jiangyin, China, the company operates as a private entity and was formerly known as Wuxi Bai'ao Biotechnology Co., Ltd. In October 2025, Pharmaron Beijing Co., Ltd. entered into an agreement to acquire a majority equity interest in Biortus.

The company's business model is centered on providing a comprehensive suite of services to pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, and research institutions. This includes recombinant protein production, in vitro assays and screening, and structural biology services such as X-ray crystallography, Cryo-Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM), and MicroED. Biortus serves a global client base with partners across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. A subsidiary, Biortus USA, manages an off-the-shelf catalog of over 1,900 recombinant proteins.

A significant milestone for Biortus was the closing of a $15 million Series A financing round in November 2020, led by Bayland Capital. This funding was allocated to establish a global cryo-EM innovation center, enhancing its capabilities in determining atomic resolution information for membrane proteins and large protein complexes. The center is a collaboration with the Wuxi Municipal Government, Wuxi New District, and AstraZeneca. In August 2025, the company launched BiortusAI, an integrated platform that combines structural biology with AI/ML for protein design, antibody optimization, and lead molecule discovery.
