WooMe
Online dating app that connects people who have common ground
About WooMe
WooMe was an online dating and social networking platform that enabled users to connect through live, interactive video sessions. The company was founded by Stephen Stokols and George Berkowski, with its origins tracing back to 2006 and a formal launch in 2007 at the TechCrunch40 conference. Stokols, who served as CEO, drew inspiration from a conversation with his sister about the challenges of traditional online dating and leveraged his background in web-based video technologies from his time at BT Group to create the platform. The company, officially under the parent Woo Media, had offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and London.
The core service allowed users to engage in speed-dating style video chats, initially connecting three people in three minutes, which later evolved into one-on-one sessions. Unlike many dating sites of its era, WooMe did not require extensive questionnaires, focusing instead on immediate, face-to-face interaction via webcam to foster connections based on shared interests. Users could create or join themed sessions on topics ranging from dating within a geographical area to finding carpool partners. The platform operated on a freemium model; registration and basic features were free, while revenue was generated through a subscription service for premium features and contextually relevant video advertisements. Premium features included the ability to read messages, see who was interested in your profile, and filter searches.
Woo Media successfully raised approximately $17.5 million in venture capital from investors including Index Ventures, Atomico, and Mangrove Capital Partners. The platform experienced rapid growth, reaching one million users within its first year. In November 2011, Woo Media and its properties, including WooMe.com, were acquired by the online dating company Zoosk, which was interested in its commercial traction and access to its ten million active users.
