Wispr Flow

AI · South San Francisco, United States · Founded 2021

Wispr Flow, developed by San Francisco-based Wispr AI, is a voice dictation application that converts spoken language into clean, formatted text in real time across virtually any desktop or mobile application. The company was founded in 2021 by Stanford graduates Tanay Kothari and Sahaj Garg with a different goal: building a non-invasive wearable neural interface, an EMG wristband designed to let users control devices and enter text silently by translating muscle-nerve signals into commands, without touch or speech. After roughly three years of hardware development, the founders concluded that consumer-grade neural interfaces weren't yet commercially viable and shifted focus, in mid-2024, to the voice-based software layer they had originally built to support the device. That pivot became Wispr Flow. Rather than transcribing speech verbatim, the tool uses proprietary AI models to strip out filler words, correct false starts and repetitions, and apply punctuation and structure, so the output reads as though typed and edited by the user. It runs on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, working directly inside email clients, messaging apps, note-taking tools, code editors and AI chat interfaces without separate plug-ins. The company also offers a companion "Notetaker" product for meetings. Customers range from individual professionals to teams and enterprises via "Flow Pro for Teams" and "Flow Enterprise" plans with centralized billing, SSO and admin controls. Since the pivot, Wispr has raised substantially larger funding rounds and pursues a broader ambition to build a voice-native "operating system" for computing. It competes with built-in dictation tools from Apple and Google as well as specialized voice-AI providers such as Otter.ai and Deepgram.
