About WireImage

WireImage established itself as a significant digital photo agency after its launch in 2001, specializing in entertainment, celebrity, and event imagery. The company was co-founded by a group of nine individuals, including photographers Jeff Vespa and Sante D'Orazio. Vespa, an American photographer and filmmaker with a background from the American Film Institute, was instrumental in designing WireImage's now industry-standard grid layout for photo displays. D'Orazio, also an American photographer, was already celebrated for his distinctive fashion and celebrity portraits, with his work appearing in major publications since the early 1980s.

The firm's business model centered on licensing high-demand visual content to a wide range of clients. These clients included magazines, newspapers, websites, television productions, and advertising agencies across the globe. WireImage provided up-to-the-minute photographic and video footage from major events such as awards ceremonies, film premieres, concerts, and fashion shows. Revenue was generated by licensing this content, which was distributed through its online platform and a global network of affiliates. The company's core service was providing extensive and timely coverage of the entertainment world, leveraging a roster of acclaimed photographers with significant access within the industry.

A pivotal moment in the company's history occurred in February 2007, when its parent company, MediaVast, Inc., was acquired by Getty Images for approximately $207 million in an all-cash transaction. This acquisition included WireImage and its sub-brands, FilmMagic and Contour Photos. Following the deal, Getty Images planned to maintain the WireImage brand and its distinct website, integrating its operations to expand global reach and enhance product offerings like editorial video and multimedia content. The founding photographers and key executives, including Vespa, agreed to long-term contracts to remain with the combined entity, ensuring continuity. In 2011, WireImage Video was rebranded as Getty Images Entertainment Video to consolidate the entertainment-focused video services under the parent company's name.
