About WiChorus

WiChorus was a network management solutions provider for 4G infrastructure, founded in 2005 by Rehan Jalil and Mustafa Ergen. The company was based in San Jose, California, and specialized in developing smart 4G packet core infrastructure products.

The company's main offering was the SmartCore platform, a purpose-built system for 4G networks like WiMAX and LTE, which also supported 3G. This platform provided operators with service and subscriber management, content management, and network optimization capabilities. It combined application analytics with a mobile core gateway to enhance traffic engineering and enable services like content-based charging and mobile advertising. The technology was designed to handle the rapid growth in mobile data traffic driven by smartphones and netbooks, offering significantly higher throughput and more simultaneous connections compared to competitors. One of its key clients was Clearwire, which used the SmartCore platform as a gateway for routing data traffic and managing mobile sessions.

Rehan Jalil, a serial entrepreneur with a background at Sun Microsystems and a Master's in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, led WiChorus as founder and CEO. His vision was to create a wireless equipment company with a capital-efficient model. Under his leadership, the company raised a total of $42.5 million in venture capital over four funding rounds from investors including Accel, Mayfield Fund, Redpoint Ventures, and Pinnacle Ventures.

In October 2009, Tellabs announced its acquisition of WiChorus for approximately $165 million in net cash, a deal that was finalized in December 2009. The acquisition was part of Tellabs' strategy to extend its mobile backhaul product portfolio into the mobile packet core market, enabling it to compete with major players like Cisco and Ericsson. Following the acquisition, Jalil became the President of the WiChorus division within Tellabs.
