About White Mountains Insurance Group

The story of White Mountains Insurance Group begins with an insurance legend, John J. "Jack" Byrne. In the early 1980s, American Express recruited Byrne to turn around its struggling insurer, Fireman's Fund. Byrne took Fireman's Fund public in 1985 in what was, at the time, the largest IPO in American history. Six years later, the insurer was sold to Allianz. Upon the sale's completion in 1991, the remaining holding company and its assets became the foundation for what would become White Mountains. This new entity, initially named Fund American Enterprises Inc., was organized by Byrne and other investors. The company's strategy, guided by Byrne's philosophy, was to act as an opportunistic acquirer and manager of insurance companies. This approach led to a series of significant transactions. Amid the dot-com bubble fallout, White Mountains invested in the online auto insurer Esurance. Following the September 11 attacks, it sponsored the creation of Montpelier Re to add reinsurance capacity in Bermuda. The company's most transformative deal came in 2001, when it acquired the U.S. property and casualty operations of CGU, renaming it OneBeacon, with significant financing from Berkshire Hathaway. Originally a Delaware corporation, the company renamed itself White Mountains Insurance Group and relocated to the major insurance hub of Bermuda in 1999. Today, White Mountains operates as a diversified holding company, owning and managing businesses across insurance and financial services.
