About Welcome Commerce

Welcome Commerce, founded in 2011 by Dan Herman, Matt Wild, and Waqas Hussain, established itself as a provider of live chat software for e-commerce websites. The company's core offering was designed to help online retailers engage potential customers in real-time to increase conversion rates. Its solution tracked customer identity, visit duration, and facilitated drop-in messages with product recommendations and deals to guide users toward a purchase.

The firm's business model centered on providing this B2B chat technology to major brands, enabling them to connect directly with consumers on the product pages of large retailer e-commerce sites like Walmart, Target, and Office Depot. This technology was one of the few third-party systems permitted on these major retail platforms, offering a distinct channel for brands such as P&G, HP, and Purina to interact with shoppers at the critical moment of a purchase decision. The company successfully raised a total of $22 million in funding over nine rounds from investors including FirstMark, Mack Capital, and Costanoa Venture.

A significant milestone in the company's history occurred in November 2018 when it was acquired by Salsify, a product experience management (PXM) platform. The acquisition included all of Welcome Commerce's assets and key personnel. Following the deal, the technology was rebranded as "Salsify Chat." Co-founder Dan Herman transitioned to the role of VP Retail Strategy at Salsify, and the Austin headquarters of Welcome Commerce became a Salsify office.
