About Weidai

Weidai Ltd., established in 2011 by a group of entrepreneurs including founder, chairman, and CEO Mr. Hong Yao, operated as an online finance marketplace in the People's Republic of China. The company's core business was centered on providing auto-backed financing solutions, positioning itself as a key player in connecting small and micro enterprise owners with sources of credit. Through its platform, Weidai facilitated loans by transforming used automobiles, a form of non-standard collateral, into investable assets. This model served a dual purpose: offering accessible credit to borrowers and creating opportunities for both individual online investors and institutional funding partners.

The company's revenue was primarily generated from service fees charged to borrowers for the facilitation and management of these loans. Additionally, Weidai charged fees to online investors for using the platform and for the transfer of their investments on its secondary loan market. The business expanded significantly, building a nationwide network of 492 service centers across approximately 300 cities within its first seven years. A major milestone for the company was its initial public offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on November 15, 2018, where it raised approximately $45 million.

However, Weidai's trajectory was significantly impacted by a shifting regulatory landscape in China concerning peer-to-peer (P2P) lending. The Chinese government intensified efforts to reduce financial risks, cracking down on P2P lending and illegal fundraising activities. In response to these national policies, Weidai announced in May 2020 its intention to exit the P2P lending business by June 30, 2020. The company had already stopped offering new loans for online investors in February 2020. In July 2020, the company came under investigation for suspected illegal collection of public savings. These challenges, combined with falling below the NYSE's minimum market capitalization requirements, led to the suspension of trading of its American Depositary Shares (ADSs) on May 16, 2022, and the commencement of delisting proceedings.
