WebVision is an online, non-commercial academic project originating from the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, functioning as a comprehensive electronic tutorial and textbook on the organization of the retina and the visual system. The project commenced in 1995, conceived as a means to summarize and disseminate the rapid advancements in understanding retinal neurocircuitry, which were accelerated by technologies like electron microscopy and microelectrode recording.

The foundational work was led by Dr. Helga Kolb, now a professor emeritus at the University of Utah, and her long-time collaborator, Dr. Ralph Nelson of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Kolb's journey in eye research began in England and continued in the U.S. at institutions like Johns Hopkins and the NIH before she joined the University of Utah in 1979. Her extensive research, often in partnership with Dr. Nelson, has significantly contributed to the understanding of retinal neurocircuitry, including the ON and OFF pathways for rod and cone signals. Dr. Nelson, whose interest in the retina began with his undergraduate thesis, has had a distinguished career investigating the neural circuitry for image processing, now using the zebrafish as a model system. The editorial team has expanded to include Dr. Eduardo Fernandez and Dr. Bryan Jones, among other expert contributors who author specialized chapters.

The business model is not commercial; it operates as an open-access educational resource for the academic and scientific community. Content and images can be used for non-commercial, academic purposes under a Creative Commons license, with the primary goal being educational dissemination rather than profit. The platform provides detailed, peer-reviewed chapters covering the anatomy, physiology, and neural organization of the mammalian retina. It serves a global audience of students, researchers, and clinicians interested in visual science. The content ranges from the simple anatomy of the eye to complex topics like neurotransmitters, phototransduction, and the psychophysics of vision, with chapters written by specialists in their respective fields.
