Webs

Webs, initially launched as Freewebs in 2001, established itself as a freemium web hosting and website creation platform targeted at small businesses, non-profits, and personal users. The company was founded by brothers Haroon and Zeki Mokhtarzada, with assistance from their younger brother Idris, while they were students at the University of Maryland. The founders' entrepreneurial drive was influenced by their parents, who were Afghan refugees and started their own business in the U.S. Haroon studied Economics and later attended Harvard Law School, while Zeki focused on Computer Science and Mathematics.

The core of the business was to provide a simple, DIY website builder, enabling individuals without technical skills to create an online presence. Its business model operated on a freemium basis; users could create a basic website for free, which included a Webs banner, or upgrade to premium subscription plans for more features. Paid tiers removed the branding, offered unlimited pages, provided more storage and bandwidth, and allowed for custom domain names. The platform featured a drag-and-drop interface, customizable templates, and integrated apps for functions like social media and SEO. For e-commerce, Webs offered a Web Store feature, primarily using PayPal for payment processing, with premium plans unlocking inventory tracking.

Experiencing significant growth, the company rebranded from Freewebs to Webs in November 2008. To expand its service offerings, Webs later incorporated the social marketing tool Pagemodo and the contact management tool ContactMe. This growth culminated in its acquisition by Vistaprint on December 28, 2011, for $117.5 million, a move intended to add a digital component to Vistaprint's print and marketing solutions. Following the acquisition, Webs continued to operate from its Silver Spring, Maryland location. Over time, the platform's services were integrated into Vistaprint's offerings, and Webs was eventually retired, with free websites being shut down by August 31, 2023.
