In 1998, before the world of smartphones and ubiquitous GPS, Jean-Michel Durocher founded Webraska in France with a vision for the future of navigation. The company aimed to transform mobile devices into personal navigation systems, a novel concept at the time. Webraska's business focused on providing GPS navigation and tracking solutions for businesses, offering services like fleet telematics, traffic information, and local facility details to optimize productivity and safety. The company showed early promise, attracting significant investor interest. In 2000, Webraska secured its first funding round, followed by a substantial €52 million second round in March 2001, led by Apax Partners Funds. This funding was intended to fuel the development of its internet-based navigation technology and support global expansion into the Americas and Asia Pacific. In total, Webraska raised $62.7 million over three funding rounds. However, the company faced the harsh realities of the turbulent telecom market in the early 2000s. This challenging environment necessitated strategic shifts in its business and revenue models to stay afloat in an uncertain industry. Ultimately, the journey for Webraska concluded with it being 'acqui-hired', a term indicating the company was acquired primarily for its talent.
