WebMethods
Application integration, business process integration and B2B partner integration
About WebMethods
WebMethods originated as an enterprise software company in 1996, founded by the married couple Phillip and Caren Merrick in Fairfax, Virginia. Initially self-funded, the company aimed to use emerging web standards like HTTP and later XML to enable real-time communication between different software applications, a concept that would evolve into what is now known as web services. Their first commercially significant product was the webMethods Integration Server. The firm saw rapid growth, securing clients like Dell and DHL by 1999 and increasing revenue from approximately $500,000 in 1997 to $202 million by 2001. A notable milestone was its initial public offering in February 2000, where the stock price surged dramatically on its first day of trading.
The core of the business is providing a comprehensive integration platform that allows enterprises to connect disparate systems, applications, and data sources. This includes on-premises legacy systems, cloud applications, and B2B partner networks. The platform operates on a business-to-business (B2B) model, serving large enterprises across various sectors such as banking, logistics, manufacturing, and retail. Revenue is generated through the sale of software licenses and subscriptions to its Integration Platform-as-a-Service (iPaaS) offering, which provides tools for application and data integration, API management, B2B integration, and managed file transfer.
The webMethods product suite is essentially an integration and automation toolkit for enterprises. Its flagship product, the webMethods Integration Platform, offers a scalable runtime environment with a library of over 300 connectors to various applications and databases, eliminating the need for extensive coding. The platform facilitates the development of integration logic through a graphical interface and also supports Java for more complex scenarios. Key features include tools for business process management (BPM), which allow for the graphical design and automation of workflows, and API management capabilities to securely expose and manage APIs for developers. The platform supports hybrid and multi-cloud strategies by enabling interoperability between cloud services and on-premises systems. After being acquired by Software AG in 2007 for $546 million, webMethods became a key brand and a major revenue contributor for its parent company. In a significant market development, IBM completed its acquisition of webMethods and StreamSets from Software AG in July 2024 for €2.13 billion, aiming to integrate these capabilities into its own hybrid cloud and AI platforms.
