WaveTec Vision
A wavefront measurement technology for cataract surgeons with their ora system
About WaveTec Vision
WaveTec Vision Systems, Inc. operated as a privately-held ophthalmic medical device company, establishing itself in the intraoperative wavefront technology market. Founded in 1997 and based in Aliso Viejo, California, the company focused on developing technology to improve the precision and outcomes of cataract surgery.
A significant turning point for the company was the appointment of Tom Frinzi as President and CEO in 2010. Frinzi, a veteran of the ophthalmic and medical device industries with experience at Johnson & Johnson, Bausch & Lomb, and Chiron Vision, led a strategic overhaul. Under his leadership, the company re-engineered its core device, revised its business model to better meet customer needs, and rebranded the product, leading to significant business growth from late 2011 onwards.
The company's flagship product was the ORA System (Optiwave Refractive Analysis), the first commercialized intra-operative guidance system for cataract surgeons. This system utilizes wavefront aberrometry to provide real-time, precise measurements of the eye during surgery, after the clouded cataract lens has been removed. This capability addressed a key challenge in cataract procedures, where surgeons previously relied on pre-operative measurements that were less accurate due to the cataract's presence. The ORA System allowed surgeons to see incisions and intraocular lens (IOL) alignment in real time, confirm the correct IOL power, and accurately correct for astigmatism, thereby improving the chances of patients achieving clear vision without needing glasses post-surgery. The device was designed to be compatible with existing surgical microscopes, integrating into the surgical workflow with minimal added time.
WaveTec's business model involved the sale of the ORA System to ophthalmologists and surgical centers. The company's technology served a market where patient expectations for refractive outcomes were rising, creating demand for greater surgical precision. In August 2014, Alcon, a global leader in eye care and a division of Novartis, announced an agreement to acquire WaveTec Vision for $350 million. This acquisition gave Alcon full rights to the ORA System, which it planned to integrate into its existing suite of cataract refractive technologies to enhance surgical confidence and patient outcomes. Following the acquisition, WaveTec was integrated into Alcon's surgical business franchise.
