About Wavesmith Networks

Wavesmith Networks, Inc. was a manufacturer and distributor of optical network equipment founded in March 2000 and based in Acton, Massachusetts. The company specialized in developing hardware designed to increase the network capacity of telecommunications carriers without requiring a complete and disruptive overhaul of their existing infrastructure.

The company's flagship product was the Distributed Node (DN) multiservice switching platform. This product line was engineered to combine various services, including ATM, Frame Relay, TDM/Circuit Emulation Services (TDM/CES), and IP/Multi-protocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS), into a compact and reliable form factor. The DN platform's architecture supported a mix of multi-service edge and core networking technologies, offering a "cap-and-grow" solution that allowed carriers to leverage their current layer 2 infrastructure while providing a migration path to future technologies. This approach aimed to make existing services more profitable and achieve significant operational and capital savings. The product family included models like the DN 2100 and DN 4100 for remote and medium-density edge applications, and the DN 7100 for central office switching.

Wavesmith Networks secured significant funding, raising a total of $84.5 million over three rounds. Key investors included Atlas Venture, Bessemer Venture Partners, Commonwealth Capital, Fidelity Ventures, Argonaut Private Equity, and CIENA Corp. The company pursued an international growth strategy early on, landing its first major sale with NetOne Systems in Tokyo, which helped secure subsequent deals in the U.S. In October 2002, Wavesmith entered into a worldwide reseller agreement with CIENA, which marketed and supported the DN product family to top-tier service providers. This partnership was followed by a definitive agreement in April 2003 for CIENA to acquire Wavesmith Networks in a deal valued at approximately $158 million.
